Networking is Dead

I’m done networking… And after reading this, you might want to quit as well.

It’s time we redefined what it means. To replace this idea of collecting, with the goal of connecting. Most of us have had this experience:

You’re at an event. You’ve been separated from the pack. You find yourself standing alone, and the BDRs can smell your fear from across the room.

One locks eyes with you, sprints over, and suddenly, you’re backed into a corner, trapped in a 30-minute pitch from someone who’s oddly enchanted by the sound of their own voice.

They drone on about what they sell and why you need it, casually name-dropping their very exclusive happy hour at a very notorious club with some very ‘important’ people, and then—silence.

Finally, they ask about you. A conversation? Amazing! You start to respond, but—wait—something catches their eye.

Their gaze drops to the lanyard around your neck. And just like that, you’ve been disqualified.

Within seconds, they vanish, off to hunt their next lead. Now, you’re left holding two drinks, wondering if you just had an out-of-body experience.

That’s not networking. That’s transactional. And it’s missing the point.

This happens all the time, yet—just like Bruno—we don’t talk about it.

Real connections aren’t about climbing over others to reach the “buying group.”

Whether or not someone is a prospect today shouldn’t be the goal. Everyone has something to offer—if you’re willing to listen.

If this inspired you to start RIGHT NOW, here are five ways to grow your circle and make a real impact on others:

1. Engage With the Posts of Others – Like, comment, or repost when someone shares a milestone. I know it sounds simple, but it feels like it needs to be said. Be a good human.

2. Reconnect & Check In – Send a quick message to an old colleague. A simple “How have you been?” goes a long way towards keeping in contact and showing others you care.

3. Help Recruiters & Your Network – Not interested in a job? Refer someone else who might be a great fit. Win-win.

4. Write a Recommendation – If you’ve worked with someone amazing, take 2 minutes to write them a LinkedIn testimonial and show your support.

5. Social Spotlight Someone – Give a shoutout to a connection who has inspired you with no strings attached.

I hope this inspires you to try one or all of the options listed above.
